Before You Scratch That Itch . . .

By lesly kahn | May 25, 2017

I hope this correspondence between an actor and me will resonate with some of you who are itching to “get into the game.”

Hi Lesly,

I was thinking about what you said in class last night – about not worrying about representation and focusing on primarily honing my craft at the moment. Do you have any notes on what you think I should be focusing on specifically to refine my craft? Let me know and thank you again for everything!!!

Talk soon,

Itching

Dear Itchy,

What should you be working on now? Everything! Everything we taught you during Intensive. Listening, organics, technicals, marketing, auditioning — all of it!!!!

Perhaps you thought we’d provide you with a few tricks and you’d be good to go.  Well, that does happen on occasion, but most of us need not only to learn a lot of new things, we have to get GREAT at ALL of them. And that takes some time. The good news is that all we do here is work on that! We’re like a dog with a bone – we will push and cajole and guilt and inspire and yell and plead until you get there.

Just (1) keep rehearsing, and (2) let us do our thing, and (3) it’ll happen!  Remember, you’re in Phase I of the Dreyfus Model and we gotta getcha all the way to to Phase V!!!! And that won’t happen overnight.

But you don’t want to put your work in front of the buyers (read:  casting, reps, networks, studios, producers, directors, etc.) before you are prepared to wow ‘em, right?  So let’s hunker down and make your acting the one thing in your career you don’t have to worry about, ok?

Love,

Lesly
