The New Normal in Casting

By lesly kahn | July 6, 2017

I got this email from Gloria Calderon-Kellett, showrunner of ONE DAY AT A TIME, the other day. She makes some pretty interesting and important points.  What are your thoughts? Email jason@leslykahn.com to let us know!

We have entered a new era of the co-star. Budgets are tight for everyone these days. The budget for our show, even with rave reviews, was cut. So, we are not able to break top of show for guest stars.  Plus, anything that isn’t a HUGE role is now a co-star. Even some really fun and interesting roles. And people tend not to come in for those. But I think they should. Especially if they haven’t done multi-cam in awhile … it’s good to get out there. Be great in your small role! Get your face out there! We Exec Producers only see credits.  We don’t get to see all the actors whose agents didn’t want them to have to read.  But I know there are TONS of actors who are just happy to work. One girl came in at my suggestion (even though her agents told her not to), she was fantastic, we gave her character a name and Telsey & Co. (who casts our show) brought her to Masters of Sex for a guest star which she booked a week later.

Also, offer only’s are now over unless you are HUGE. I can’t tell you how many actors I’ve never heard of that are offer only and we just don’t get to see them. Actors should want to read. They should want to get in there and work it. Feel the chemistry of the room. Of the producers. At least for what I do in multi-cam.

Please don’t be offer only.  Please come in and read for us. Let us get to know you.  Let us get to work with you!
